Senior AI & Automation Engineer
Location: India (Remote) | Type: Full-Time | Reports To: CEO | Team Size: 3-5
About the Role
We are a healthcare services company building an in-house automation program from scratch. This is a founding role — you will own the entire automation architecture, select the tools, design the workflows, and build a team around it. We serve 270+ healthcare organizations across the US, and the problems you will solve involve messy real-world data, complex compliance requirements, and workflows that span multiple systems.
This is not a staff augmentation role where you execute someone else's design. You will define the roadmap, make the architectural calls, and have full ownership of the automation stack. If you want to build something meaningful with real autonomy, this is it.
What You'll Build
AI-Powered Automation: Design and deploy AI agents that handle document processing, data extraction, classification, and decision support across healthcare workflows
Orchestration & Integration: Build and maintain automation pipelines using N8N, Power Automate, and custom Python scripts — choosing the right tool for each problem
Agent Architecture: Implement LLM-based agents with tool-calling, function calling, and MCP (Model Context Protocol) for complex multi-step tasks
API-First Development: Connect disparate healthcare systems via APIs, webhooks, and middleware — turning manual handoffs into automated flows
Team Building: Mentor junior developers and interns, building a bench of automation talent. Document architectures, create training materials, establish engineering standards
Stakeholder Collaboration: Work directly with operations leaders to identify high-impact automation opportunities, estimate ROI, and prioritize the roadmap
Must-Have Skills
Python as a primary language — you think in Python, not just script in it
Strong API integration experience (REST, webhooks, OAuth, API chaining)
Hands-on experience with at least one LLM integration (OpenAI API, Claude API, LangChain, CrewAI, or similar)
N8N or Make at an advanced level (custom nodes, error handling, complex branching)
Solid understanding of data pipelines — extraction, transformation, validation, loading
Ability to architect solutions end-to-end, not just build individual components
3+ years of hands-on automation engineering (we care about what you've built, not how long you've been employed)
Strong-to-Have
MCP (Model Context Protocol) — understanding of tool-calling patterns and agent orchestration
Power Automate / UiPath — useful for specific enterprise workflows, but not the core of this role
Healthcare domain experience — understanding of HIPAA, credentialing, revenue cycle, or clinical workflows
Experience with vector databases, RAG pipelines, or document intelligence
DevOps basics — Docker, CI/CD, cloud deployment (AWS/Azure)
What We're NOT Looking For
Pure RPA developers whose entire experience is UiPath Studio with no programming depth
Certification collectors with no real build experience
People who need detailed specs handed to them — this role requires you to figure out the "how"
Someone looking for a 9-to-5 execution role — this is a high-ownership, high-autonomy position
How We'll Evaluate You
Forget LeetCode. We will ask you to:
Walk us through something you've built end-to-end — architecture decisions, tradeoffs, what broke and how you fixed it
Complete a take-home challenge: build a working automation that combines an API integration, an LLM call, and an N8N workflow (48 hours, paid)
Whiteboard a solution to a real problem from our operations — we want to see how you think, not how you memorize
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary based on experience and capability
Full remote with periodic in-office collaboration weeks
Direct access to the CEO — no layers of middle management
Opportunity to build a program from zero, with your name on the architecture
Work on genuinely complex healthcare problems with real-world impact
