Project Overview:&nbsp;&nbsp;Research opportunity alert: calling all multilingual gender studies / discourse analysis / feminist approaches to international affairs students. Not sure if that’s you? If you are interested in examining how societal views on gender impact power structures, nuclear weapons, and diplomacy, and you speak Russian, Mandarin, or Spanish, this is the role for you.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are seeking graduate research assistants to support a project examining dynamics shaping the discussion of gender issues in the field of nuclear weapons nonproliferation and disarmament. Funded by Middlebury’s Conflict Transformation initiative, this project employs an innovative approach grounded in an understanding of gendered discourse in the nuclear field and the role of interpretation and translation in shaping meaning and debate at multilateral nonproliferation and disarmament forums. The project utilizes critical discourse analysis to map the factors shaping this conversation and to identify best practices for practitioners working on gender issues in the nuclear field.&nbsp; &nbsp;Project Duties:&nbsp; &nbsp;The graduate research assistant(s) will assist with data collection and analysis. A key component of this work will include examining conference transcripts, working papers, recordings, and other conference records to identify trends and nuances in the discussion of gender issues across languages and to code the records accordingly. Research assistants without experience using qualitative data analysis software will be trained in its use. If interested, there may also be opportunities for research assistants to assist with drafting analysis based on the data analysis findings.&nbsp;&nbsp;GRAs may have the opportunity to travel to New York City for a UN conference in October 2024.&nbsp; &nbsp;Required Qualifications:&nbsp; &nbsp;<ul> <li>Current graduate student at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.&nbsp;</li> <li>Language skills: Mandarin and/or Russian. Applicants should have strong written and oral comprehension of the language. Applicants with skills in other UN languages (Spanish, French, or Arabic) along with other relevant qualifications may also be considered for a limited role.&nbsp;</li> </ul>&nbsp;Preferred Qualifications:&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul> <li>Familiarity with discourse analysis methods, feminist approaches to international relations, critical research methodologies, and/or gender studies.&nbsp;</li> <li>Experience with data analysis, NVivo or other qualitative data analysis software, and/or experience with translation and interpretation are also a plus.&nbsp;</li> </ul> &nbsp;Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they meet every listed qualification. Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government. (An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to U.S. citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component. Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.<h3> </h3><h3>Hour Limitations:<a href="https://www.middlebury.edu/office/human-resources/student-employment/working-middlebury-campuses#hour-limitations" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external"></a> </h3>All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods). The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically: February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess. During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students: Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
